JELLIZ & GESTES | SONIA KACEM jusqu'au 7 juillet 2023 (2023)

Sonia Kacem developed her research surrounding abstraction in Islamic art and modernist Tunisian artists through her residency with us in 2022. She then found impressions in spontaneous gestures in public spaces that were translated into repeated motifs in her watercolor books, a sequel to the watercolor books she began in Cairo.

The abstract gestures created by Kacem were transferred to "jelliz" ceramic tiles fabricated and handpainted in Nabeul, Tunisia, the capital of Tunisian ceramics. The essential elements of a motif can be found in the ceramic tiles presented in Jelliz & Gestes or even the unfinished concrete facades of buildings, which have been the source of inspiration for the wall paintings coloring the exhibition.
